HDMI to DVI/VGA converter/adapter.
Have a spare DVI/VGA monitor laying around? Thinking of connecting your HDMI output device(e.g android stick, BR player etc) to that DVI/VGA monitor? There are some constrains that you should know about.
For HDMI to DVI-D conversion, there are inexpensive cables out there that are able to do this. Here are some example : -
You can use HDMI to DVI-D(digital only, single-link or dual-link) cable if what you are after is purely the video output from the HDMI. Those cable will do just fine. The problem arises when you want to include audio output from HDMI. DVI as you know does not have any audio input pins. In such cases, how do we obtain the audio?
It is not possible to extract the audio straight out from HDMI without some kind of converter in place. All HDMI signals are in digital and it does not transmit any audio signal in analog.
You would need to use a converter to extract the digital audio into analog audio.
Here is a solution that might be able to help you achieve just that.
The following drawing illustrate the connections with the HDMI to VGA converter.
The “HDMI to VGA converter” will convert the HDMI to VGA signal and also provide a “Audio Line out” for you to connect to your sound system. Do note that this converter will not be able to convert VGA to HDMI signal. There is separate device to do this.
I happen to have a monitor that comes only with DVI inputs, but with the help of a DVI to VGA video cable, I can connect the “HDMI to VGA converter” to my monitor without much fuss. The “HDMI to VGA converter” taps power from the HDMI input, so you do not need a separate power source for it. No drivers are required for it to work also. It’s basically plug and play.
If you are interested, you can get the “HDMI to VGA converter” or “DVI to VGA video cable” for yourself from here :
I have not tested this particular converter yet but I guess it should be about the same as the one above.
Do note that these “HDMI to VGA converter” comes in two variants. One with audio output and another without audio output. Make sure you choose the correct one for yourself.
That’s all. Have Fun..
